Harold Unger, Unger LTD New York, NY

A leading expert in tactical thinking on the topic of tax strategies and the use of insurance for the high-net-worth and ultra-high net worth classes, Mr. Unger is the consultant many top estate attorneys, accountants and asset managers want to add to their team when they are building a plan for clients.

Mr. Unger has earned the trust and respect of top industry professionals because of an admirable track record of success in this highly specialized field. His understanding of the technical details in taxation, estate planning and insurance is wide and deep.

An engaging personality, Mr. Unger’s perspective begins with a basic concept that drives his overall philosophy and follows the thinking of the brilliant jurist Learned Hand, who said, “(N)obody owes any public duty to pay more than the law demands: taxes are enforced exactions, not voluntary contributions.”

When he formed The Unger Company, Ltd., Mr. Unger intended that his firm specialize in the design and implementation of life insurance for trusts and estates, and business succession planning. The firm has a decades-long track record of success in planning for high net worth (HNW) and ultra-high net worth (UHNW) individuals/families both foreign (with US holdings) and domestic. Under Mr. Unger’s guidance, the company has remained totally independent from any insurer, enabling it to select the optimum solution and thereby address each client’s specific tax burden concerns and wealth transfer needs.

Mr. Unger’s expertise is highly respected in the industry. He has been cited in publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Market Chronicle, as well as making appearances on the Financial News Network and CBS Morning Business. He’s spoken before such groups as the Sy Syms School of Business of Yeshiva University, New York Bar Association, the Institute of Management Accountants, American Society of Women CPAs, Westchester CPA Society, and the NYS Society of CPAs.

Beyond this work, Mr. Unger is a long-time technology enthusiast. Combining his interest in technology with his profession led him to found and run a software company alongside The Unger Company. This company produced a powerful financial planning product that was adopted by several large financial services firms for their high-end field advisory workforce. Among the program’s users were such giants as Salomon Smith Barney and Morgan Keegan & Company. The software included such features as advanced trust planning, enhanced income tax and retirement planning capabilities, and an employee stock option plan analysis. To this day, Mr. Unger maintains his cutting-edge information technology knowledge and refers to himself as “the world’s oldest technology geek.” He continues to maintain a ham radio operator’s license that he earned in his youth, although he wonders why, since some say a ham radio conversation is akin to dialing the wrong telephone number and talking for 30 minutes or so.

A graduate of Brown University with an A.B. in Economics, Mr. Unger also holds a J.D. and LL.M. (Tax) from Boston University School of Law and its Graduate Tax Program.
